Here is JUNGLE COMICS #53 from May of 1944 - about a third of the way through its run of 163 issues, spanning the years 1940 to 1954. Published by FICTION HOUSE after their successful run of Pulp Magazines starting in 1921, JUNGLE COMICS became one of FH's 'Big Six" comic book titles that sold over 150,000 copies each month!

Here in issue #53 you get to share the adventures of series stars KAÄNGA and ANN MASON (that's ANN on the cover, chained at the neck and wearing her ubiquitous leopard skin outfit!) as well as subsidiary, but ongoing, characters, WAMBI THE JUNGLE BOY, CAMILLA, TABU, SIMBA, CAPTAIN TERRY THUNDER, and RONGO THE ELEPHANT! Within its 52 pages you get 6 complete stories, as well as a 2-page treatise on the Monkeys of Africa!

Issues of JUNGLE COMICS, like this one, contributed to Dr. Frederic Wertham's crusade against comic books (with his claims that the scantily clad, sexy, pneumatic heroines and 'Jungle Maidens' of comic books contributed to adolescent juvenile delinquency), and indirectly led to the downfall of publisher FICTION HOUSE in 1954. With story titles like "Slaves for Horror's Harem" in this issue, you can maybe understand Wertham's concerns!

You can judge for yourself -- we're offering this really nice copy of JUNGLE COMICS, which has supple pages, and minimal toning for its 82 years of providing entertainment! The cover is secured by one staple, the centerspread is loose, there is a minor bit of wrinkling on the front cover and a tiny edge split of 1/4", but no creases, folds, discoloring, rough edges., or anything that detracts from the great art inside!

We conservatively grade this copy a 5.0 VG/FN which the Overstreet Price Guide values at $98 . . . but we'll make acquiring this comic easier than that, and price it at only $72 for you fans of leopard-skin outfits!
